Generally speaking, I’m not a fan of reader or viewer expectations. If I knew enough about music, I wouldn’t be a fan of listener expectations. I’m not a fan of the idea of an author having a contract with the consumer of their product. In certain circumstances, sure, there’s a general agreement, but that agreement is on the consumer not the creator. The creator needs freedom. However, if an author employs traditional foreshadowing practices–thereby requesting the consumer judge the work for those employed practices, well… it does get annoying. It’s a much better idea never to acknowledge expectations or create them at all.
