It’s one page. Maugham does one of his one page chapters after Cakes and Ale has been multi-page until now. It’s a flashback (still) and it’s a single scene. It’s frustrating because I’m writing about it, but I do love him using the chapter format to control reader pace and attention emphasis. It also sets up the next chapter–or better–nicely. Maugham’s cheerful version of Of Human Bondage is kind of growing on me. In the flashbacks, he’s finding a lot of charm he doesn’t allow in the present-day sequences.
