Maugham brings the flashback sequel to an inglorious end with a paragraph-long chapter explaining Ashenden knew nothing of Rosie’s outcome other than some rumors. It’s perfunctory where the flashbacks tended to be lush and rambling. Maugham handled young man Ashenden’s longing for Rosie’s company far better than he handled them actually keeping company. And, now, presumably, the novel is going to move into the present day and potentially tie things together. There’s not much promise to it since old man Ashenden is such a git. Maugham’s got this verbose first-person narrator who can’t figure out how to accurately talk about himself. It’s annoying.
